It’s a collection of tools made by Google which aim to help with productivity and collaboration, specifically to enhance teaching and learning. You may have heard of it referred to as Google  Apps for Education, and you’re probably wondering what it’s all about. We’re here to break it down and let you know – without the tech talk – what G Suite for Education actually is…

What is G Suite for Education?

G Suite for Education (formerly “Google Apps for Education”) is a group of tools offered by Google to help with productivity and collaboration.

They are cloud-based, which essentially means that everything is stored online (in the cloud). What does this mean? There are many practical ways that cloud based apps, like the ones part of G Suite for Education, can make life easier.

  1. The fact that everything is stored on the cloud means that the devices you use to access the apps do not need to have a large amount of storage space, often meaning they are more affordable – which is a bonus if you are buying for a group of students.
  2. Also on the topic of storage is that G Suite for Education offers unlimited storage for all of its apps including Gmail, Docs, Slides, Sheets, and many more (which will be explained later in the article).
  3. When working on a word document, presentation or spreadsheet in G Suite for Education, all of your work automatically saves. For someone switching to Google from Microsoft this will definitely take some getting used to. But not having to constantly be clicking save through fear of losing all of your hard work definitely eases the pressure, and sets your mind at ease.
  4. Your files can be reached from any device, because they are stored on the cloud and not on the device itself, you can log into your Google account from any device and have access to all of your work. tHis can happen safely and securely because of the security features put in place by Google such as two factor authentication (where you must verify the sign-in on another device such as your mobile phone, to make sure it’s really you trying to log in).
